Round 16: Sorrento 4 v Inglewood United 1
After a fantastic result against ECU Joondalup the previous week, the Gulls faced in-form, 4th-placed Inglewood United at Percy Doyle.
The Gulls knew they needed to win if they were to make top 4, or even mount a title challenge.
The game burst into action after 30 seconds with Inglewood almost scoring as Ajak Riak just failed to connect with a great cross from Barrera.
Then a few seconds later, Scott Witschge drew a great save from Inglewood keeper Godfrey.
On 4 minutes, the deadlock was broken as a Jordan Roberts corner was headed in by Jordan Brown.
In the 9th minute, the Gulls went 2-0 up with a poacher’s goal from Chris Jackson. A Jordan Roberts shot could only be parried by the keeper and former golden-boot winner Jackson smashed the ball in from 2 yards.
It was almost 3 for the Gulls as Ollie Annis hit the post from a Roberts pass. The 3rd goal did arrive on 27 minutes as a Tristan Stevens diagonal pass put Witschge away down the right. He put a great cross over and Jackson scored his 2nd with a well-placed header.
On 32 minutes, it was 4-0 as Jackson finished clinically with his left foot having been put through by a Witschge header.
Substitute Alex Morgan almost made it 5 on 75 minutes, heading against the bar. An injury-time goal from Roberto Soares pulled one back for Inglewood but all in all it was a very satisfying day for the Gulls, especially as the top 2, Floreat Athena and Perth SC both dropped points.
Next week the Gulls face bottom of the table Rockingham City at Percy Doyle, hoping to maintain pressure on the top 2.
Come along and support the lads. With 6 games left, there’s all to play for.
