NPL: Sorrento 1 v Cockburn City 3
The long awaited start of the NPL season finally arrived with the visit of Cockburn City to Percy Doyle Reserve.
There were Sorrento NPL League debuts for a number of new signings including Yousri Gharsallah, Afian Giyanto, Graham Tough, Clark Keltie, Ollie Annis, Amir Ajan and club legend Sean Canham.
There was also an NPL League starting debut for 16-year-old Daniel Faichney.
Cockburn went in 1-0 up at the break following a heavily disputed penalty which was converted by man of the match Riley Van Dieken.
Sorrento started strongly in the 2nd half and you had the feeling that the equaliser was not far away.
In the 58th minute it arrived. Striker Cameron Teece flicked the ball through to Alex Morgan who held the ball up back to goal and released Faichney down the left. Faichney beat his man down the outside and put a cross over to Ollie Annis who took a touch and then dispatched clinically into the far corner to make it 1-1.
It looked for most of the half as if there would be only one winner as Sorrento hit the post through Morgan and had a few other chances.
Then against the run of play Cockburn took the lead with a fine finish from substitute Ali Gholami in the 81st minute, only 2 minutes after coming on.
Then 2 minutes from time a potential goal of the season candidate from Van Dieken, an absolute screamer from 25 yards that went in off the bar.
That was hard to take for the Gulls who up to the 80th minute would have expected to take at least a draw.
That’s football! Round 2 sees the Gulls play away against Chris Coyne’s Bayswater City who have a number of new signings themselves including former Gull David Stokoe, former Glory NYL players Riley Warland, Zayd Farah, Luke Salmon and Gomo Dukuly and former Stirling Lions midfielder Dean Cummings.
