Sorrento FC 2 Bayswater City 1 – Gulls Bounce Back at the Doyle
Following a very difficult game at local rivals ECU Joondalup last week, a big crowd saw the Gulls bounce back in great style against Bayswater City.
You know you are always going to get a tough match against any Chris Coyne side and Bayswater looked formidable with a forward line comprising Daryl Nicol, Luke Salmon, Gordon Smith and Gustavo Marulanda as well as Gulls old boy David Stokoe in central defence.
The Gulls welcomed back Ollie Annis after suspension and set up to be defensively difficult to break down.
After 8 minutes, the Gulls struck. Morgan picked the ball up just inside the Sorrento half and played the ball to Teece down the left-hand side. Teece put Annis through down the wing. A dangerous cross was ballooned up in the air by Stokoe and the ball fell to Teece whose exquisite first touch took the ball right and after a further touch he buried a curling shot past Stephenson into the far corner. It was a superb goal from a striker in great form.
5 minutes later the Gulls should have been 2-0 up, Teece went through on goal and forced a great one-handed save from Stephenson, the ball broke to Witschge and his shot went into the side netting.
After 16 minutes Bayswater struck back. Smith turned Morgan and played the ball inside to Luke Salmon. Salmon played the ball inside to Marulanda who found a pocket of space on the edge of the area. He unleashed a shot high into the roof of the net which Giudicatti had no chance to stop.
Bayswater had plenty of possession but the the Gulls had 2 great chances, the first one Annis put over the bar. The second one on 35 minutes Annis put Faichney away down the left wing. Faichney went past Mirco and picked out Teece in the area and Teece’s shot was well saved by Stephenson at his near post.
At half-time Amir Ajan replaced Ollie Annis, the latter having picked picked up a thigh strain. Bayswater continued to push forward but Sorrento were resolute in defence. Then on 49 minutes disaster struck for Bayswater as Gordon Smith was sent off following an off the ball incident with Shaun Kilkelly.
Sorrento stayed organized but found more space as they looked to make the extra man count. Then on 59 minutes Sorrento took the lead. Amir Adjan picked up the ball on the left corner of his own penalty area and made a brilliant run almost the full length of the pitch, before crossing to Morgan on the far post and he dispatched a great header past Stephenson.
For the next 30 minutes, Bayswater threw bodies forward in search of the equalizer but they could not break through a very well-organised Sorrento defence.
On 68 minutes, Sorrento almost scored a 3rd but Stephenson saved well from Morgan and Teece could not direct the rebound on target and Bayswater survived.
Matt Giudicatti, who had an excellent game, then made a 2 great saves on 74 minutes from 2 long-range Declan Hughes drives.
To the delight of the Gulls fans, the team saw the game out for a well earned 3 points as they move up a couple of places in the League, equal on points to ECU Joondalup and next weeks opponents Cockburn City, who we play away at Dalmatinac Park on 1st August.
