Round 2: Around the Grounds

Just two rounds in to the National Premier Leagues WA season and only one team can reflect on a perfect start.

Armadale sit proudly on top of the table following their 3-0 win over Rockingham City on Saturday, proving once again that the Night Series is no reliable form guide.

John O’Reilly’s side lost all five of their Night Series games, including three successive 5-0 defeats. But they have hit the ground running now the season is in full swing, as two goals from Adriano Jelenovic and a Sam Garces strike left promoted Rockingham still seeking their first point, and goal, in the NPL.

Armadale coach O’Reilly said: “The six points is most important to us, the position on the ladder’s irrelevant right now.”

Game of the day was at Dalmatinac Park where Cockburn City and Inglewood United drew 4-4.

Daniel Robinson scored a hat-trick for Cockburn, including an 89th minute penalty which looked to have sealed the three points for the home team. But in the seventh minute of added time Hamza Hina rescued Inglewood with his second of the match.

Perth SC had too much for Stirling Lions at Macedonia Park, winning 3-0. Gustavo Catarcione and Nicolo Sabatini put the Azzurri 2-0 up inside 25 minutes and Harley Orr’s penalty after the interval ended the game as a contest.

Sorrento moved on from their opening round loss by winning 3-2 at ECU Joondalup.

Two-nil up and cruising, Sorrento went in at half-time on level terms following two goals from Jacks’ forward Joe Knowles. The former Perth Glory man then had the chance to complete his hat-trick but missed a penalty and that proved decisive, as Cameron Teece won the match for the Gulls with a stunning long-range free-kick.

Balcatta began the 2019 season with a 4-0 win but they were on the wrong end of it at E&D Litis Stadium on Saturday, losing 3-0 to Perth Glory.

On Friday night Bayswater and Floreat Athena fought out a gritty 2-2 draw at Frank Drago Reserve. Adam Tong’s injury-time own goal got the visitors out of jail after two goals from Daryl Nicol had seen Bayswater overturn a first-half deficit.
