Football Update: Covid-19

Good afternoon members,

We hope you and your families are keeping well through these challenging times.

It is pleasing to see the easing of restrictions announced by the State Government earlier this week. I’m sure children and parents will also benefit from the return of school and a sense of normality. WA has done an outstanding job in containing the spread of COVID-19 which is credit to the amazing community in our state and to our government for their leadership. The allowance of gatherings of up to 10 people is encouraging signs for a return for community sport in the near future.

The Sorrento FC committee met last night and would like to provide you an update of possible return dates for training and junior competitions. Football West have been significantly impacted by the cessation of both senior and junior competitions and credit must go to the limited staff that are working through a constant moving target in efforts to resume our game. Football West Senior and Junior Standing Committees are in regular communication with staff working towards scenarios of completing a full season of competition when games recommence.

As per FFA’s current direction football activities are currently postponed until 31 May 2020. As per this directive Sorrento FC are working from this date for junior teams to start training and a tentative start date 2 weeks later for competition games. There are likely to be a number of restrictions inclusive of players, family members, carers / supporters attendance which will be confirmed in due course. Please note that these dates are flexible depending on government restrictions.

Whilst it’s great news restrictions have been lifted to gatherings of 10 people unfortunately that does not mean that we can resume training or other football activities yet. As mentioned, FFA has not lifted their postponement and so any football activities will not be covered by FFA/Football West insurance.

In addition our grounds are not yet available to us to book from the City of Joondalup meaning we are not insured and lights are not switched on. The gathering rule still has a stipulation of social distancing and no contact. Should we take a chance, flout the rules, be reported and fined the future of our club would be in jeopardy, unable to sustain any amount of financial penalties likely imposed.

The current restrictions are being continually assessed and we are hopeful of a return to football soon. We are working hard behind the scenes and are looking forward to welcoming back our coaches, managers and players and having another successful season for Sorrento FC. We continue to encourage our players to work on their fitness and technical skills in anticipation of a start date.

Should our members decide to get together in groups of 10 or less, we ask you to respect government guidelines, please do not wear Sorrento FC kits or use pitches associated to the club.

We will keep you updated as events change and we look forward to getting back on the park soon.

Keep well and stay safe.

Regards,

Derek Harnwell

President
